Going through Matter Park, one can see the Marion Parks and Recreation Department set up lights for the annual Walkway of Lights. But who originally created these light designs?
GP Designs was founded in 1945 in Marion, Ind., making it the “oldest and largest outdoor Christmas manufacturing company in the United States,” according to CEO and President David Loer.
The company dealt with financial problems in the 1990s, Loer said. He was hired on to help out.
Not only has GP created designs for places in New York and Tennessee, but it has also shipped to Gwam, Philippines, Japan and Ireland.
People can find GP Designs’ lights in famous Christmas movies such as “Elf,” “Home Alone,” “Christmas with the Kranks” and “Christmas Vacation.”
Loer says although the company helps with other national and international companies, he enjoys working locally as well. He said he likes to be able to see the design rather than send one out to a different state and never see it again.
“We like being partnered with Marion and [other cities in Grant County],” Loer said. “You get more of a personal ownership … You get that one-on-one relationship.”
The Walkway of Lights will make its debut Saturday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m., and will run until Thursday, Dec. 31st.
